Onnig Atamian, an Armenian painter was born in 1925 to an aristocratic family in Syria. He was at the Melkonian Armenian Institute in Cyprus from 1931 till 1948 – first as a student, then as an Art teacher. In 1945 he had his first successful one-man show in Nicosia. He left Cyprus in 1950 and from then till 1955 he traveled extensively around the world as a sailor. On shore leave in England, he met his future life companion, Dolly Gwynne. He quickly established himself as an artist in London and he was a prizewinner for the Daily Express Young artist’s exhibition in 1956. In 1962, he was the prizewinner at Ulster Museum for his Earthwork. From 1963 till 1967 he had an artist’s contract with Eric Estorick at the Grosvenor Gallery in London. During this time, he produced large number of ink drawing, watercolours and oil paintings and he had several exhibitions, including at Arthur Jeffries Gallery and at the Grosvenor Galleries, including Landscapes and Townscapes and Seven Young Artists in 1965. He was invited, as a distinguished artist to Yerevan, Armenia, in 1968, by the Armenian government and he had a one-man show at the National Gallery of Armenia, where he showed 27 new oil paintings and 29 watercolors. The National Gallery in Yerevan bought most of his paintings and he returned to England in 1970.
He and Dolly moved to Essex, where he remained till his death 1999.
