Heyning W/D - stands for the combined work of Wied and Diederik Heyning. Diederik preoccupied with clay, shapes and glazes, Wied with pattern, rhythm and color. In the end one product emerges from the kiln. They essentially produce functional porcelain. Having sculpted in clay and plaster for a number of years, Diederik became captivated by the challenge to capture and reproduce the attractive sensuality of round forms in a more abstract way. Using the throwing wheel and the slab roller, the regular sequence of throwing, turning, assembling, glazing and firing, grew from a hobby to a full time occupation. Diederik was formally educated in the Netherlands and the USA and worked for 25 years in business in England, France and since 1985 the Netherlands. Kees Agterberg taught him how to use the wheel in 1995. For the further development of techniques and know how, he benefitted from seminars by Arne Åse, Peter Lane, Bryan Trueman Nigel Wood and Horst Goebbels. In 1998 he was taught by Gordon Cook at Westdean College (Sussex, UK). Painting and music have continuously played a role in Wied’s life. The family and children were her first priority but she always managed to find time for artistic activities. Wied was educated as a French linguist at the University of Groningen and for years taught French to children and French Literature to adults. Gradually her interest shifted towards the visual arts and after the children left home it has become the focus of her life. The family lived in France for 12 years and from 1982 to 1985 where Wied attended drawing and painting lessons in Marseille. Afterwards she attended courses in graphical art and techniques in the Netherlands. Brush painting, which she was taught in Korea (1998), is the basis for her work on ceramics. Painting on a three dimensional object is a challenge. The form is a source of inspiration and leads towards a composition. Image, texture and pattern need to enhance the form. Nature provides endless examples of complementary beauty: perfect harmony of shape and color. At present HeyningW/D is concentrating on thrown and hand built porcelain with several types of decorative techniques: - Metal chlorides or salts, sometimes called ‘Watercolors on Porcelain’
White areas are masked with Shellac. Layer by layer different chlorides are applied. Chrome chloride provides the green, Cobalt chloride the blue, Gold chloride the purple/pink color,
- Brush painting with copper red-green glaze.
- Relief by taking away clay after masking with shellac. Our products are complete only when in use, hence their denomination of Functional Ceramics. The customer’s imagination is the only limit to an object’s functional life.

Additional Notes"We use a combination of techniques that is not very common. Relief porcelain Diederik mixes flax fibers into porcelain clay and roll slabs a few mm. thick on a slab roller. These are cut and assembled into vessels using porcelain slip as ‘glue’. On bone dry objects Wied paints a pattern with a mixture of shellac and alcohol. This dries quickly into a hard mask. Diederik sponges away the bone dry clay from the areas that are left uncovered by the shellac. When the shellac has burnt away this leaves a relief pattern that is highlighted by the translucency of the thin porcelain once it is fired. Copper red painting Diederik has developed a copper oxide paste that Wied uses for painting patterns on unfired porcelain clay. Once covered by a transparent alkali glaze the pattern simultaneously reveals both green and red tones after firing. Thickness of both copper paste and glaze determine the shades of final color, thus revealing details of brush strokes and pressure. Chloride colors Inspired by work of Arne Åse in this field, we use iron/cobalt/chrome/gold chlorides instead of the more common oxides for coloring. Chlorides dissolved in water paint like watercolors, penetrating the clay and producing pastel tints beautiful by themselves, unglazed."
